This is a “hot-rod fire pump.” Awesome.

Why is a fire pump is necessary?

Every fire sprinkler system needs enough water to supply all of the sprinkler heads, right?  Sometimes it’s not possible to get that much water into the building so we install fire pumps to pull more water into the system.
Fire-sprinkler-system-water is supplied by the town-water main buried below the fire hydrant out in the street.  The hydrants are connected in a network of pipes to supply water to multiple buildings and the water inside of those pipes is shared among many, many buildings in a city like Manchester, New Hampshire.
